Is North America A Mission Field

Posted: January 26, 2013 in Personal Evangelism

God gave me the privilege to serve on staff at one of the largest Protestant denominational mission agencies in North America. One of my assignments was working on a team that researched the changing trends both secular and religious, the population shifts and churches that were plateau, declining and dying.  One of the conclusions that our team made was that North America was one of the world’s largest mission fields. Our team in a report to the executive leadership we stated that America was now the “North American Mission Field.”

One question I am repeatedly asked is “Where is our mission field?” I usually respond with “Where is your church located or where do you live, work, play?” Wherever God has placed you to live or in ministry that is your mission field.  So should we ask ourselves, are we reaching our community mission field with the gospel?

Day Four

Jesus Defined the Mission Field

Luke 19:10 Jesus said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which is lost”. (NASB)

Focus: Be open to God’s Spirit leading you to see and witness in your mission field.

Jesus defined His own evangelistic mission when He said, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which is lost” (Luke 19:10). His mission was to call the sinner to repentance (Luke 13:3, 5). Twice He gave an evangelistic appeal before He preached the message. He instructed the hearers that “unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.”

The Great “Missionary” Commission

The Great “Missionary” Commission is a divine call. Jesus commands Christians to evangelize in His name and to preach repentance and forgiveness of sins to the whole world (Luke 24:47). Jesus commanded His followers to go and do as He did. He said, “As the Father has sent me, I also send you” (John 20:21). In the two verses above we see the first emphasis to a missionary or missions calling. Jesus was a missionary sent by God the Father to evangelize the lost man and to pay for sins of the world through the shedding of His blood on the cross.
