“You Don’t Have to Be Afraid”

Posted: December 23, 2013 in Personal Evangelism

But the angel Gabriel said to Mary, “Don’t be afraid. You have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son and you are to give him the name Jesus.” Luke 1:30-31. Now we know that Mary was already a seeker and follower of Yahweh. She was probably meditating on God, or God’s Word, or maybe even in prayer when the angel Gabriel appeared to her at this holy moment. We can know that she was of the Pharisaical teaching and belief because she accepted the angel’s presence. This school of thought believed in angels, the Spirit and the resurrection.

As I read these two verses during our Bible group I thought “What an amazing conversational approach to evangelism!” Most people have a fear of God or do not have a reverence toward God. People today need to know that they do not have to fear God! Maybe under the leadership of the Holy Spirit we could begin a witnessing conversation by saying, “You do not have to fear God. You have found favor with Him. You can know Him through His One and Only Son, Jesus Christ.”

I am not saying that every conversation should begin with this disarming statement. But in the correct moment, in a time such as the Christmas holidays, we could engage someone in a similar manner. Maybe we could say, “Do you know that you have found God’s favor? God says, “You do not have to fear Me.” What a great way to transition into a Christmas story gospel conversation. Emmanuel means “God with us!” and Jesus means “God saves!” What great and refreshing news to offer in today’s world when depression is prevalent  and poverty on the increase, and many people searching for a small glimmer of hope.

During this time of the year there are more people who are depressed, or contemplate suicide or are lonely. To offer the hope of knowing God and knowing that they have God’s favor could be the game changer if for just one person. But realistically, we know that it could impact numerous people. We have to give credit where credit is due. If anyone does come to understand the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ, it is because of God’s Spirit and the power of the gospel released on earth, Mark 2:10. We share out of obedience to Jesus command, “Go Witness!”

The words, “Do not fear God” and “You have found favor with God” and “You can be with God through His Son, Jesus” are wonderful life giving words. Who knows if you say these encouraging words to someone today, or the next few days, maybe in 2014, you will see God’s life changing power transform an individual into a grace living person.

Offer the HOPE of Christmas, Jesus, Emmanuel, to someone and give them a reason for the season to have Merry (Happy) Christmas (Christ Celebration)!
